Cute FTP Setup Instructions

CuteFTP is a shareware FTP program that can be used for 30 days free of charge before being registered. The following tutorial will explain how to configure and use CuteFTP version 4.0 to upload files to your Quicksilver website.

Before your begin, make sure you have your Quicksilver webspace username and password.
You should also have enabled your webspace (if not already done). Skip this if you have Windows NT or Premium Linux hosting.

Open the Cute FTP program (close any shareware messages or tip of the day messages)
You should now have the Site Manager in front of you.

Click on "New" to create a Quicksilver connection.

Fill in the information as follows.

Label for site - call it Quicksilver or something that you will remember.
FTP Host Address - www-upload.quicksilver.net.nz OR if you have Windows NT or Premium Linux hosting your hostname will be username.qsihost.co.nz
FTP site User Name - enter your Quicksilver webspace username (this is usually, but not always the same as your internet username).
Password - your Quicksilver webspace password (this is usually, but not always the same as your internet username).
FTP Site Connection Port - leave this as 21
Login Type - leave this as Normal

Click on EDIT

Host Type - Auto Detect
Default Remote Directory - /doc/
For Windows NT & Premium Linux Hosting this is /htdocs/
Default Local Directory - click on the yellow folder button to browse to the folder on your hard drive where your website files are.

Important: If you are behind a firewall, or an ADSL router, you will need to TICK the box that says "Use PASV mode" (once you click on it, the tickbox will turn white so you can select it)

Click OK

Your connection to the Quicksilver server is now ready to be used.
Click on "Connect" to connect to the server.

If you succeed in connecting, a window like this one should pop up. Click on 'OK' to get rid of the window and proceed.

You should now have the main window in front of you, which will look something like the one below.

The area on the left represents the files on your computer's hard drive, and the area on the right represents your account on Quicksilver's web server.

Select a file from your hard drive (use the drop-down menu to navigate through your directories and click once on the file to select it) and click on the up arrow to upload the file.
Once your file has uploaded to Quicksilver's server, you should be able to see it in the directory on the right.

To create a new directory (folder) on Quicksilver's server, go to the "Commands" menu, choose "Directory" then click on "Make New Directory. A box like this will appear. Type in the name of the new directory and click on "OK".

You should now be able to see the new directory in the directory on the right. To save a file into this new directory, double click on the directory name then proceed with uploading the file as above.

You can test your site by visiting http://pages.quicksilver.net.nz/username (or your domain name address). Note for beginners: the first page in your website is always named index.html or index.htm

Note: if you have Windows NT or Premium Linux hosting you can test your site by visiting http://username.qsihost.co.nz
