Downloading & Analysing your Website LogfilesYour 'raw' logfiles can be downloaded from your website, and processed so that you can view statistics on how many visitors your site has had etc. The raw log files are just text files, and you will need some software to process them into nice looking graphs that you can view. We recommend WebLog Expert Lite, which is free to download from here. Downloading the Log FilesUsing your normal FTP program, connect to the server, but instead of going to the /doc/ directory, go to the /log/ directory. Only the last 3 month's log files are kept. At the end of each month they are rotated, and the oldest one is removed. We recommend you log in once a month and download the file so you have a permanent copy. If you are using Cute FTP, you can set it to do this automatically once a month. You will see several files here in the /log/ directory. Only 4 files are important to you. These are: access.log - this is the current month's file, up to today. (sometimes you may also see access.log.3.gz - this is 4 months back) Download these files to your computer, and rename each one to the month and the year it applies to eg. 2004january.log Your files are now ready to process. Analysing the Log FilesThese instructions are for the WebLog Expert Lite software. Open the WebLog Expert Lite software, and click on NEW.
Browse to the folder that you have saved your log files to, and click on FINISH.
You should now see the website profile you have created. Select your profile, and click on ANALYSE. The software automatically reads the files and creates a page called index.html inside the WebLog Analyser program folder, and displays this for you.
