We have installed local numbers in many towns around New Zealand. Local numbers will enable us to offer even better service and more reliable connections to people outside the main centres. These local dial-in numbers will replace the existing 0867 dial-in number. More local numbers will be installed in other towns around NZ in the coming month. Watch this space! Speaking of surfing... don't forget that there are lots of great locations- some of them just around the corner- where you can beat the winter chills.

From Trevor Isted:

www.tangalooma.com
just off Brisbane and a paradise for refugees from winter shivers.

From Lin Nah:

Popular locations to warm up and chill out are places like Fiji, Hawaii, Noumea, etc. Check them out at
http://www.nzherald.co.nz/travel/

Travel agents pages also give you hot deals of the week. You may also find these travel links handy:
http://www.travel.co.nz
http://www.travelonline.co.nz/

Lin has also included a number of links that will help with the energy crisis we are facing:

http://nzsites.com/electrical/powersavingtips.htm
http://www.energywise.co.nz/content/tips.html
http://www.energyideas.org/library/residtips.cfm
http://homeenergysaver.lbl.gov/hes/makingithappen/mih.html
http://www.energy.gov/efficiency/index.html

Surely now is a very good time to look at alternative energy sources, too:
http://www.energize.co.nz/alternative/alternative.htm
http://www.windenergy.org.nz/

A good NZ site on Energy information is available here:
http://www.energyinfonz.co.nz/index.asp

New Zealand is known for its geothermal energy resources, but finding a site with information that’s easy to digest is another matter! Try this for size:
http://altenergy.about.com/
http://directory.google.com/Top/Science/Technology/Energy/Renewable/

For a more lighthearted view of energy:
http://www.dancingrabbit.org/energy/electricity.html
http://www.jeffry.com/technology/windflower/windflower.htm
[http://www.jeffry.com/technology/windflower/windflower.htm was the original link. On 20 August 2002, I was notified of a change in the link and changed it on 26 August 2002 ]

Another hot topic

Another hot topic making the news this week was the controversy on genetic modification. The Royal Commission on Genetic Modification has just released its report at this site, if you’re in to it:
http://www.gmcommission.govt.nz/RCGM/rcgm_report.html

Did you hear about the Code Red worm? The average user is not too badly affected, as you can see at this site:
http://www.cert.org/incident_notes/IN-2001-08.html

The systems affected are network specific systems such as Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 with IIS 4.0 or IIS 5.0 enabled
Systems running Microsoft Windows 2000 (Professional, Server, Advanced Server, Datacenter Server) and systems running beta versions of Microsoft Windows XP .

From Guy:
http://ca.com/virusinfo/encyclopedia/
is a pretty useful database of practically all viruses you can think of. Just type a virus name (for instance “win32.SirCam) into the search box, and you’ll get very useful help on dealing with viruses and removing them as well.

Happy surfing from the QuicksilverTeam!

QUICKTIP of the month: CHANGING YOUR LOCAL DIALUP NUMBER

You would have read above that in keeping with our efforts to make your Internet connections faster and more reliable, we have established a number of local dialup numbers throughout New Zealand. If you live in any of the listed areas, please change your dialup number (which is probably 086745837 at the moment) to the appropriate number for your area.

On any Windows system, please follow the steps below to make the changes.

1. Open your Dialup Networking Folder. On Windows 95 and 98 this is inside My Computer; in Windows ME it is inside Control Panel, and in Windows 2000 it is inside Control Panel and called Network and Dialup Connections instead.

2. Click with your RIGHT mouse button on your Quicksilver connection, and choose Properties from the popup menu.

3. This will open up a multiple tabbed window listing the connection properties. You will find yourself on the first tab, General. Change the telephone number as needed.

4. If you have Call Waiting on your line, to avoid incoming calls disrupting your connection please remember to add your temporary Call Waiting disable code before the number (for Telecom lines, add *52, for other networks, please call their respective helplines).

5. Also ensure that the option to Use Area Code and Dialing Properties (Use Area Code and Country Code in Windows 95, Use Dialing Rules in Windows 2000) is unticked before you close the window.

PLEASE MAKE SURE THAT YOU ARE NOT USING AN AREA CODE AS PART OF YOUR DIALUP NUMBER.

Close all dialogue boxes, and you will be able to connect with the new numbers.

Best wishes from the Quicksilver Helpdesk!
